Where do I get an API key?
From the provider's developer site, such as Anthropic for Claude or OpenAI for ChatGPT. Paste it into Mixroadie once; it is stored in your Keychain or Windows Credential Manager.
Updated
A cloud AI in the Mixroadie panel runs on your own API key, billed by the provider for what you use. A full song mix costs about one to two cents with the models Mixroadie starts on. That is an estimate: it varies by provider, model and how much you ask.
Getting one
- Make an account on the provider’s developer site and open its API keys page (links below). This account is separate from a Claude or ChatGPT chat subscription.
- Add a payment method or some credit there.
- Create an API key and copy it. Most sites show the key only once.
| Provider | Create a key | Prices |
|---|---|---|
| Claude (Anthropic, recommended) | platform.claude.com | Claude pricing |
| ChatGPT (OpenAI) | platform.openai.com | OpenAI pricing |
| Gemini (Google) | Google AI Studio | Gemini pricing |
| OpenRouter | openrouter.ai | OpenRouter models |
Mixroadie also takes keys from Groq, Mistral, DeepSeek, Grok (xAI) and Together. Its setup links to the same key page and price list beside each option.
Adding it to Mixroadie
Choose the cloud option during install, or later in the panel’s Settings, and paste the key. Before you do, Settings shows exactly what would be sent to the provider.
The key is stored in the macOS Keychain or Windows Credential Manager, and is removed when you uninstall Mixroadie.
What is sent
Small blocks of numbers measured from your tracks, track names, the project’s shape (tempo, track count, folders) and what you typed. Never audio, and never a reference track’s file name.
